Abstract

To study the clinical, epidemiological and catamnestic features of intellectual disabilities in children in the Zabaykalsky Krai, a study of epidemiological data, analysis of medical records and a populational examination of 1059 children from several areas of the region has been carried out. In the Zabaykalsky Krai there are high rates of general and primary incidence of mental retardation in children, especially in rural areas, an increase in mental retardation in the structure of incidence and prevalence in children has been noted. In a populational examination of 6–7-year-old children, intellectual disabilities were diagnosed in 52.9% of cases, in the structure of which mental retardation accounted for 11.6%. These disorders prevailed in children in rural areas. A low rate of seeking psychiatric help for all mental disorders and insufficient diagnosis of mild forms of mental retardation were revealed. According to the results of the follow-up study, 66.2% of children with mental retardation were not seen by psychiatrists at the time of reaching adolescence, which may be due to the positive dynamics of the identified disorders and their good adaptation.
