In this scientific review of a narrative type with the aim of summarizing the results of the analysis of grouped publications on the epidemiology and burden of depressive disorders, as well as the medical and social characteristics of people with depressive disorders, using stable phrases and keywords in relevant bibliographic systems and databases (Scientific Electronic Library elibrary.ru, Cyberleninka, PubMed) a search for scientific publications was conducted. A total of 256 articles were found, 68 sources were used for citation. There are signs of a significant increase in the incidence of depressive disorders: over the decade (2007–2017), the number of new cases increased by 17.8%, and during the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, this figure increased by another 21.6%. Scientific work on the epidemiology of depressive disorders in Russia is required, as well as additional measures to improve the diagnosis and improve the effectiveness of treatment of people with depressive disorders, especially in the primary medical network.
