In this cohort study aiming to identify dynamic associations of serum BDNF levels and markers in the BDNF gene with clinical manifestations of alcohol withdrawal syndrome, 132 patients with a primary diagnosis of F10.3 (withdrawal syndrome) undergoing hospital treatment were examined. Serum BDNF concentrations and psychometric testing were performed during treatment process. The BDNF gene polymorphisms rs925946, rs6265, rs10835210 and rs7103411 were genotyped using real-time PCR. BDNF serum concentrations but not the polymorphisms of the corresponding gene, are dynamically associated with the severity of the withdrawal syndrome, alcohol craving alcohol, the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as cognitive abilities.
