In this empirical study, 221 patients were examined in order to study cognitive impairment in patients with alcohol use disorders and to find clinical predictors that affect them. 40 mentally healthy people were examined as a control group. Tests from the CANTAB database on verbal memory, working memory, restraining control, decision-making and attention were used to assess cognitive functioning. Patients with alcohol use disorders performed significantly worse with all the proposed tests compared to the control, which indicates a wide range of cognitive impairments. The age of the patients was a significant predictor, showing negative associations with verbal and working memory, as well as attention. Male gender was a factor in reducing deterrent control. The level of education showed a positive relationship with decision-making based on logic. Progression of alcohol dependence had a negative effect on deterrent control, and the duration of the disease had a negative effect on working memory. The ROC analysis identified 48 years as the threshold age for predicting a decrease in cognitive functioning in patients with alcohol dependence by more than 2 standard deviations.
