In this original study, in order to assess the key socio-economic indicators of Kurgan region (Ural Federal District of the Russian Federation) in association with the level of suicidal mortality, data from federal and regional statistics on suicidal mortality and key socio-economic indicators of suicide in the period 2010-2023 have been analyzed. The study showed that in 13 years the number of suicides in the region has more than halved (from 411 to 190 per year). However, the figures calculated per 100,000 population significantly exceed the national average: in 2011 – 44.5 (in the Russian Federation – 21.8), in 2023 – 25.2 (in the Russian Federation – 7.8). At the same time, there is a lag in the rate of decline in the United States compared to those registered in Russia. The basic reasons for this situation may be negative socio-economic conditions – a decrease in the population of the region, a decrease in birth rate, an increase in mortality, an increase in alcohol consumption, an increase in general morbidity of the population against the background of a shortage of doctors. Kurgan region, due to the accumulated problems in the past, cannot expect a sharp decrease in suicidal mortality within a short period of time, relying only on the medical service. To improve the situation and solve the problem, a multilateral coordinated work of the regional health and social protection system is required, combined with an improvement in the economic performance of the region. Given the tense suicidological situation, it is necessary to develop a territorial prevention program involving all interested departments and funds.
