Attention disorders in the perception of emotional stimuli in depressive states: oculographic examination data (eye-tracking)

In this single-stage, cross-sectional eye-tracking study, we aimed to assess attention to emotional stimuli in patients with depression. We conducted a clinical, psychopathological, and oculographic examination of 85 patients with non-psychotic depression, including those with recurrent depressive and bipolar disorders, as well as those with a single depressive episode. The control group consisted of 36 healthy individuals. The oculographic assessment was performed using a free viewing task, stimulus set includes 80 pairs of emotional face images expressing various emotions (joy, sadness, anger, fear, disgust), in comparison with neutral faces. In the depression group, we observed a significant decrease in total fixation time on joy emotional faces, suggesting a decreased attention to positive information.
