Abstract

In this scientific review, in order to consider the role of inner speech in the processes of self-regulation and its disturbance in psychopathological conditions, the theoretical ideas about the formation of inner speech as a result of the internalization of outer speech and its role in the organization of the conscious experience of the individual are analyzed. The connection between inner speech and emotional regulation, action planning and decision making is substantiated. Special attention is given to the processes of automatization and deautomatization of inner speech in norm and pathology. The differences between the concepts of “arbitrariness” and “will” are considered, as well as their correlations with the concepts of meaning and sense. A model of the functioning of inner speech is proposed, which provides for a cyclic transformation of sense and meaning as the main mechanism of mental self-regulation.

Keywords inner speech; self-regulation; will; arbitrariness; meaning; sense; understanding
