Abstract

In this original study 148 adolescents with an established clinical diagnosis of mild mental retardation (F70 according to ICD-10) were examined in order to analyze the possibilities of using oculomotor activity parameters to assess cognitive difficulties in the perception of multimodal messages by adolescents with intellectual disabilities. It was found that adolescents with this diagnosis have specific patterns of oculomotor activity: an increased number of fixations (3.91±1.97 vs. 2.72±1.28; p<0.001) and gaze returns (1.60±0.76 vs. 1.01±0.45; p<0.001), as well as a longer processing time for graphical stimuli (2450 ms vs 1850 ms for text; p<0.001). The diagnostic value of oculomotor activity parameters as markers of cognitive impairment has been confirmed.
