Abstract

The paper presents an overview of the contemporary youth suicide preventive interventions, the existing evidence for their effectiveness, and a Multidimensional Youth Suicide Prevention Programme implemented in the healthcare system of Novosibirsk region since 2007. The programme is based on the current knowledge of risk factors and mechanisms of suicidal behavior in children and adolescents and includes monitoring of suicidal behavior and high-risk groups, early crisis help for children and families and information campaigns. The psychiatric healthcare system is organized and managed on three levels (primary, interregional and consultative) and includes correction, psychotherapy and medication. Preventive interventions are implemented in well-coordinated work of multiple agencies. Programme components are discussed in light of the current evidence for effectiveness of youth suicide preventive interventions; the need for effective coordination within and between the agencies is demonstrated.
