The paper describes a model developed in experiments on rats revealing deficits in sensory perception of relevant stimuli which is a leading negative symptom of schizophrenia. Experiments with selective electrolytic impairment of the nucleus accumbens medial shell in rats have revealed the important role of this structure in selective attention to relevant stimuli and blocking out irrelevant stimuli or combinations thereof. This model may be used to study etiology and pathogenesis of schizophrenia as well as for preclinical testing of pharmacological drugs potentially promising for correction of visual perception deficits in patients with schizophrenia.
