Mental confusion tends to occur not infrequently in elderly patients with dementia which makes it difficult to provide them with adequate care and sometimes requires their hospitalization. Earlier the authors have demonstrated the possibility of successfully using tiapride medication for correcting mental confusion. In this context it is also currently important to determine the factors impacting on the outcome of such therapy which is the focus of this publication. A study was conducted of 76 patients with lateonset progressive dementia and in a state of confused mind. The patients have undergone combination therapy which involved the use of tiapride, antidementia treatment and vasoactive and neurometabolic medications. The GDS, CGI, PSP scales were employed as well as a structural evaluation using the scale for assessment of mental state of elderly patients with dementia. Statistical analysis also included factor analysis. The basic factors that influenced treatment outcomes were found to be the intensity of cognitive impairments, clinicodynamic profiles of acute organic brain syndrome, specific features of pharmacotherapy intervention and somatic effects. The above factors also included a complex of clinical and biopsychosocial interventions. An important aspect of tiapride application was the use of adequate doses of medication.
