On the issue of gender identity disorder in transsexualism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders

The aim of this review is to summarize information about gender identity disorders. We have analyzed the studies devoted to this problem which had been carried out by Russian and foreign psychiatrists. We submit data on epidemiology, etiology, clinical signs of gender identity disorders in transsexuality and schizophrenia, as well as their comorbidity. Also, we describe the methods of providing medical care to persons with such pathology. In addition, we submit information about the upcoming changes in the classification of gender identity disorders, in particular, those applicable to transsexuality. In the process of writing this review we have analyzed 93 sources, 45 of which have been included in this work.
