This review, pursuing the objective of providing substantiation for Philippe Pinel’s psychiatric reform, which took place during the French Revolution. In the history of psychiatry, and civilization as a whole, Phillipe Pinel’s reform is seen in the context of the entire subsequent 200-year history of psychiatry. The discussion pertaining to John Conolly’s “non-restraint” principle is elucidated in the light of contemporary bioethics. In contradistinction to the evaluation of Phillipe Pinel’s role in history offered by Michel Foucault – one of the founders of anti-psychiatry – these authors equate the civilizational significance of Phillipe Pinel’s psychiatric reform with the invention of book-printing technology by Johannes Gutenberg and the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus.
