Abstract

Patients with borderline psychiatric pathology make up by far the largest and then the most challenging in therapeutic-prognostic terms population cohort for psychotherapy. The present report explores the current state of psychotherapy of borderline psychiatric disorders (psychopathological and personality borderline disorders) abroad with disclosure of the main trends of its development, data on advantages and drawbacks of individual therapeutic approaches as well as their clinical and economic efficiency.

There is clear evidence that over the past twenty years separate methods of psychotherapy in borderline psychotherapy showed an uneven rate of development with the bulk of publications presenting the outcomes of using psychoanalytically oriented and cognitive-behavioural approaches as being the most effective. Several promising innovative forms have been developed as part of both therapeutic modalities for treatment of borderline cases. Both areas of psychotherapy tend to develop towards group therapy interventions.

Also during the period under review there emerged a number of new methods of psychotherapy based on the fusion of analytical and cognitive-behavioural techniques. Finally on evidence derived from the review several reasons are proposed regarding the prospects of evolution of Russian psychotherapy in psychiatric hospitals specializing in treating borderline personality disorders.
