A survey of 909 respondents which included psychiatrists – 73, nursing personnel – 158 and medical attendants – 119 people, 303 mental health care users – schizophrenic patients in remission and a comparison group: a representative sample of the population – 256 respondents) revealed that occult beliefs are widespread among mental health care providers ranging from 16.4 percent among psychiatrists, up to 40.5 percent among medium – level medical personnel and 38.7 percent among paramedical personnel. Occult beliefs are shared by almost half (48,8%) of users of psychiatric services and among the general population this figure is as high as 34 percent. With regards to the degree of depth the occult beliefs may be divided into three types: archaic- mystical, conformal and realistic. Risk factors for the formation of occult beliefs are highlighted and issues related to the prevention of occult beliefs among mental health care providers and users are discussed.
