Changes of lipid peroxidation and content of the erythrocyte membrane fatty acids in patients with paranoid schizophrenia

We have studied 68 patients with the first episode of schizophrenia. The control group was made up of 20 donors, comparable in age in gender to these patients. It has been established that patients have a high content of products of lipid peroxidation (TBA-active products and Schiff base), reduced activity of the glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalase enzymes. The erythrocyte membranes in schizophrenia patients have been found to contain the increased quantity of saturated fatty acids and the multidirectional alteration of the quantity of the polyunsaturated ones: the deficit of the arachidonic acid, the increased concentration of the γ-linoleic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosapentaenoic acids. It has been suggested that the modification of the fatty acid content of erythrocyte membranes in schizophrenia patients is linked to the changes in metabolism of the polyunsaturated fatty acids by the phospholipase А2, cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase.
