Abstract

The scientific review submits the analysis of Russian and foreign publications, dealing with conversion disorders in epilepsy. The purpose is to systematize the extant data, evaluate the prevalence and reflect the contemporary approaches to differential diagnosis of the psychogenic non-epileptic seizures as the most widespread variant of conversion in epilepsy. These approaches determine the novelty of this problem and the treatment strategy for the above-mentioned disorders, as well as improvement in the quality of life and social functioning of this category of patients. The review also deals with the risk factors for the emergence of conversion seizures, the modern diagnostic criteria, the interconnection between conversions and affective disorders, and alexithymia. We have studied over 300 sources, 48 of which have been included in the review.

Keywords epilepsy; dissociative disorders; conversion disorders; psychogenic non-epileptic seizures; pseudo-attacks; hysterical attacks; hysteron-epilepsy
