Problems of diagnosing schizophrenia in patients who consume psychoactive substances

We have analyzed 35 domestic and 25 foreign works, devoted to the problems of diagnosis of different stages of schizophrenia and the consequences of drug use, especially in intoxication psychoses, as well as comorbid disorders (combinations of schizophrenia and addiction to illicit drugs). Particular attention is paid to the effects of the latest generation of illicit drugs – the synthetic, or designer ones. This review made it possible to arrive at the conclusion that these problems have not been adequately studied, despite their urgency for general and forensic psychiatry and addiction medicine, crime prevention, and society as a whole. Further study of intoxication psychoses and disorders caused by schizophrenia in combination with drug use can throw new light on the pathogenesis of the psychopathology of schizophrenia spectrum disorders and the new possibilities for preventing drug use.
