Risk Factors for Suicidal Behavior in Patients with Schizophrenia

This scientific review of literature has singled out and ranked the practical significance of a number of biopsychosocial risk factors for suicidal behavior of schizophrenic patients. Among the clinical features we noted the prognostic significance of the history of suicide attempts, depressive symptoms (hopelessness), and failure to adhere to the medication regimen. The only powerful anti-suicidal factor was found in the accessibility of effective care and in adherence to it. The data submitted in the review facilitate diagnosing the suicidal risk in schizophrenic patients and making the choice of therapeutic conditions; they serve as the scientifically sound evidence-based substantiation for the development of a targeted anti-suicide program for schizophrenic patients.
