Abstract

This article discusses the main clinical and epidemiological features of the children’s psychiatric hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic studied on the example of Scientific-practical Children’s and Adolescents Mental Health Center named after G. Sukhareva, Moscow Department of Health Care. Our aim with this paper was to analyze the anti-epidemic measures aimed at preventing the spread of a new coronavirus infection in a children’s psychiatric hospital. We also investigated the characteristics of mentally ill children who were treated during the epidemic. We outline major challenges for children with psychiatric disorders and their families and mental health professionals during the COVID-19 outbreak, and also discuss how to manage these challenges. Particular attention is paid to the organization and working methods of the clinical observation department, which was set up to provide psychiatric care to children suffering from mental disorders with suspected or confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. We have carried out the comparative study and identified the peculiarities of hospitalization in a children’s psychiatric hospital at the height of the epidemic (April-May 2020) and during the same period of the previous year (April-May 2019).
