Cognitive impairments in non-psychotic depressive disorders

Depressive disorders are severe, sometimes disabling medical conditions, often associated with impairments in cognitive and social functioning. The traditional view of the two main types of cognitive dysfunction in depression – cognitive distortions and cognitive deficits, is now actively updated and corrected by the results of neuropsychological, neurobiological, neuroimaging and genetic studies. This paper provides a review of the current studies in the field of cognitive impairments in depression and discusses a range of theoretical and practical complexities associated with their systematic analysis. Separately explored is the impact of antidepressants on cognitive functions in terms of prospects for optimizing pharmacotherapy of patients with depressive disorders.
