Outlook for improved quality of psychiatric care in the Russian Federation

Abstract

Reviewed in the paper is the current state of psychiatric care delivery in the Russian Federation and the prospects for improving its quality. It is based on data gleaned from state statistical monitoring between 2005 and 2013. Given bedspace reduction without an adequate increase in outpatient units, staffing shortfall, reduced therapeutic activity of primary care physicians in mental health care facilities of federal subjects of the Russian Federation, there is an express need for a drastic overhaul of psychiatric services.
