A controlled one-stage study was conducted to examine the specifics of visual perception and interpretation of pictograms, varying in the degree of iconicity, in adolescents with mild mental retardation. 120 students in grades 7–9 with different levels of intelligence participated in the study. The control group included 60 normally developing children, and the experimental group was composed of 60 children with intellectual disabilities (ICD-10 clinical diagnosis F70 "mild mental retardation"). The subjects performed visual subtests on decoding symbols from four pictographic systems: Blissymbolics, LoCoS©, Pictogram, signs of public places. Eye-tracking was used to analyze oculomotor activity. It was found that the cognitive complexity of the Blissymbolics system increases in the number of fixations in the group with intellectual disability. This group had a higher success rate in recognizing pictograms of the LoCoS© system compared to the Blissymbolics system. In addition, the perception of public signs in control group was influenced by their experience of learning pictograms during rehabilitation.
