In this scientific review, in order to consider the main definitions and significant diagnostic criteria for non-suicidal self-damaging behavior, the existing theoretical approaches to describing this phenomenon have been analyzed. Its key characteristics have been identified, the dynamics in theoretical understanding have been demonstrated, and diagnostic criteria have been analyzed in accordance with the ICD-10, ICD-11 and DSM-5 classifications. Currently, this phenomenon is considered not only as a possible symptom of borderline personality disorder, but also as a separate clinical condition – non-suicidal self-harm. The most comprehensive and valid criteria for non-suicidal self-injurious behavior are presented in the DSM-5, however, there are individual indicators that require further development, especially for children and adolescent patients.
