Abstract

In a single-sample cross-sectional study to identify the relationship of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) with personal characteristics and the level of self-esteem in men of military conscription age in non-clinical population, 507 men of military conscription age (from 18 to 27 years) were examined. In this sample, a high prevalence of NSSI was found – 33.9% of the surveyed young people of military conscription age committed an act of self-harming behavior at least once in their lifetime. At the same time, it was revealed that men of military conscription age with a history of self-harm were most often characterized by introversion, lack of self-control, emotional instability, rigidity, low self-esteem and self-image. It is concluded that the scales of self-harm, personal characteristics and self-esteem (self-image) should be used as an addition to the standard screening methods of examining persons of military conscription age during psychiatric examination.
